How We Pick

Every recommendation on this site — from the generator and from The Gift Guide — comes out of the same pipeline. Here it is, with no mystique.

1. A curated catalog, not the whole internet

We maintain a hand-curated catalog of a few hundred products from real, reputable merchants — the kind of things that recur in serious gift guides and hold up in real homes. Every product enters with structured data: price, age fit, budget tier, gift type, and what it's actually good for. Things we never stock: alcohol, tobacco, weapons, supplements, medical or diet products, adult products, or anything age-restricted.

2. Daily health checks

Dead links are the cardinal sin of gift content. Product links, prices, and availability in our catalog are re-verified on a daily cadence (product images weekly), and anything that fails a check is automatically pulled from serving until it passes again. If a pick appears on this site, it was recently confirmed to be a live, buyable product page.

3. Fit scoring, then selection

When you use the generator, your brief is matched against the catalog: budget ceiling enforced, age and safety mismatches filtered, your stated avoidances excluded, then the survivors scored for fit and diversity (no two picks from the same merchant when we can help it, and never the same product twice in different colors). An AI model reads your brief and the eligible slate and writes the final six with reasons. Gift Guide articles use the same gate and scoring, with the persona defined by the editor instead of a reader.

4. What commission does — and doesn't — touch

Some links on this site are (or may become) affiliate links: if you buy, the merchant pays us a commission and your price stays exactly the same. Here is the honest breakdown of influence:

  • The six main recommendations:selected with zero commission data. The AI that writes your picks literally cannot see commission rates — they aren't in its inputs.
  • The occasional “bonus pick”:drawn from subscription and digital gifts, a category that tends to support the site more than physical products. It's labeled as a bonus, and it still has to pass the same fit gate as everything else.
  • The catalog itself: merchants get in by making genuinely giftable products, not by paying us. No merchant can buy placement, and no pick is ever swapped for a worse-fitting product because it pays better.

Short version: commission does not determine our recommendations. Where it has any influence at all, we just told you exactly where.

5. Humans in the loop

We review recommendation quality continuously, prune products that underperform, and rewrite prompts when the robot gets weird. AI can still be wrong — prices change, stock vanishes, taste is taste — so verify the product page before buying. Found a bad pick? Tell us: hello@thoughtlessgift.com.
